This is a tailor-made program for 10K SAGE2 screen in SAGElab at my university, simulating what would it look like if there was a window in the room instead of the screen. It displays actual weather and lighting conditions.
UNI Project
Create a non-trivial live 10K screensaver for SAGE screen.
I was looking for a problem which I could solve with this project. The SAGElab has many devices in front of its one window, which obstruct the beautiful 14th floor view and make the room dark. Adding one more window would make the inner atmosphere more pleasant and the lab workers more efficient.
As I wanted to turn the screen into a “real-life” window, I needed to take photos of the view from the same side of the building. However, all of the windows were dirty and difficult to open, so I got the idea to shoot from the roof. Now, this was very tricky because our roof is not open to the public or students but with the help of my friend I managed to get access to it.
I surpassed my fear of heights three times and took photos of a sunny day, rainy day and night. I combined them into panoramas, then photoshopped the rest of the weather conditions, found reliable weather API and wrote the program.
The original plan was to add animations bringing the static images to life but modern programs don’t allow working with 10K resolution or have issues playing it.
Program for SAGE2, including 10 10K images.
